Tobias Cole Israel is a drummer and music educator from Sonoma, California. His father Michael is an established drummer in his own right, playing with Richard T, Norah Jones and the Flock of Seagulls. Drumming was around in Tobias’ early life even though he didn’t take lessons until his 20s. His godfather, Dave Weckl, introduced his father to an amazing educator named Freddie Gruber in 2001. His father expressed that Tobias showed early signs of rhythm and asked Freddie if he should put him in lessons when old enough. Freddie said to not and if he was truly meant to play, he would find the drums himself. Tobias went in many different directions like being a world ranked BMX racer to a Pilot. From 2018 to 2020, Tobias studied aviation in Arizona before discovering his true calling in music. He got his private pilot license and moved back to his fathers house before COVID hit. This is where he started to practice and search behind the drums while working construction. In 2022, he received a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music, where he learned from the likes of Darren Barrett (Esperanza Spalding), Billy Kilson (Spyro Gyra), and Tony “Thunder” Smith (Jeff Beck). Immersed in diverse styles, he now performs in LA across genres—jazz, rock, pop, hip hop—and teaches students of all levels. Tobias also formed a group called Perspectives with ever changing lineups , some including Abigail Zachko, Aidan Finn Johnson, and Takoda. With a passion for connecting music and people, he brings joy and heart to every performance, recording and lesson.
